Multiply the price per gram of pure metal by the nisab weight. This site uses 612.36g of silver and 87.48g of gold: - Silver nisab = 612.36 × silver price per gram - Gold nisab = 87.48 × gold price per gram For example, at an illustrative £1.50 per gram of silver, silver nisab is £918.54. At £100 per gram of gold, gold nisab is £8,748. The panel above uses the dated reference price instead of these illustrations. ## Where do 612.36g and 87.48g come from? The hadith sets the thresholds as 200 dirhams of silver and 20 dinars (mithqal) of gold. Converting those coins to modern weights gives 612.36g and 87.48g in the convention this site uses. Another widely used conversion gives 595g of silver and 85g of gold, about 3% lower. Both are recognised; follow one coherent method rather than mixing weights from different calculators. ## Should I use the gold or silver nisab? Our calculator defaults to silver and offers gold. Silver produces a much lower threshold, so more people meet it, and many UK organisations use it for cash and mixed wealth. Some scholars apply the gold standard, particularly when wealth is held only in gold. The choice depends on the assets held and the approach you follow. Mixed wealth, jewellery and alloys may need more specific treatment. Ask a qualified scholar when the difference changes your liability. ## Do I deduct nisab before calculating Zakat? No. Nisab is a threshold, not an allowance. If the relevant conditions are met, the usual 2.5% applies to your whole net eligible balance. With £5,000 of eligible savings above nisab, Zakat is £5,000 × 2.5% = £125 — not 2.5% of the amount above nisab. If net eligible wealth is below the threshold, no Zakat on wealth is due for that year. ## Which date’s price should I use? Use the price on your Zakat date: the lunar anniversary of when your wealth first reached nisab. For current valuations, compare with a reliable dealer’s quote and record the source. ## Is reaching nisab enough for Zakat to be due? Not on its own. Zakat on wealth is due when eligible wealth at or above nisab has been held for a lunar year ([the hawl](https://zakat-calculator.org.uk/hawl-explained)) and the other conditions of ownership are met. Schools differ over temporary dips below nisab and new wealth received during the year. The calculator asks you to confirm your anniversary but cannot verify your financial history. ## Common questions ### What is the nisab today in the UK? The figures at the top of this page show today’s silver and gold nisab in pounds with the price date. They are updated daily from provider reference prices: 612.36g × the silver price per gram, or 87.48g × the gold price per gram. ### Why is the silver nisab so much lower than gold? Silver is far cheaper per gram than gold, and the historical ratio between the two thresholds no longer matches today’s prices. That is why the choice of standard can decide whether Zakat is due for someone with modest savings. ### Does nisab apply to each asset separately? Generally no. Eligible cash, savings, investments, business assets and gold or silver are added together, permitted debts are deducted, and the total is compared with one nisab.
