Deadline: Fitrana must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer — expected around 21–22 March 2026 (subject to moon sighting). Pay during Ramadan if you can; it is valid to pay early.

Who counts as part of your household?

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse
  • Your dependent children (minors living with you)
  • Any other dependants you financially support (e.g. elderly parents in your care)

Adult children who are financially independent pay their own Fitrana. You pay for dependants — those who rely on you for their livelihood.

Fitrana vs Zakat al-Fitr — same thing?

Yes. Fitrana is the colloquial South Asian term for Zakat al-Fitr — the same obligatory Ramadan payment. Whether you call it Fitrana, Fitra, or Zakat al-Fitr, it refers to the same obligation.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) in 2026?

Fitrana 2026 in the UK is approximately £5–£7 per person, depending on the staple food standard used and the scholar/charity you follow. The lower figure (£5) is widely accepted; £7 is the higher estimate. It must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, making the deadline around 21–22 March 2026 for this year.

Who pays Fitrana?

Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs for that day and night must pay Fitrana — for themselves and for every person they are responsible for (spouse, children, and dependants in their household). A person pays on behalf of themselves and anyone under their financial care.

Is Fitrana the same as Zakat?

No. Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) is a separate obligatory payment — it is not part of your annual 2.5% Zakat al-Mal. Both must be paid independently if they apply to you. Zakat al-Mal is calculated annually on your total wealth. Fitrana is a fixed per-person payment due once a year at the end of Ramadan.

Who can receive Fitrana?

Fitrana must go to those in need — specifically the poor and destitute (the same first two categories as Zakat). It must ideally be distributed locally before Eid prayer so the poor can celebrate. Giving to a charity that distributes to eligible recipients is accepted.

Can Fitrana be paid in cash?

Yes. While the original ruling was to give food (one sa' of staple food per person), the majority of contemporary scholars — including the Hanafi school — permit the cash equivalent to be paid to a charity, which then distributes food. This is the standard practice in the UK.

What is the deadline for Fitrana 2026?

Fitrana must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. In 2026, Eid al-Fitr is expected around 21–22 March (subject to moon sighting). You may pay during Ramadan — even at the start — but it is invalid to delay it until after the Eid prayer.

Pay your Fitrana before Eid. World Aid Network distributes food to the poor — a valid Fitrana recipient.
