Current UK rate: £300 per deliberately broken fast

= 60 people × £5 per person (two meals each)

⚠️ Kaffarah is for deliberately broken fasts only. If you broke a fast due to illness, forgetfulness, emergency, or any necessity — that is Qada (making up the fast), not Kaffarah. Kaffarah applies only when you intentionally broke a valid fast without a legitimate Islamic excuse.

The three Kaffarah options explained

1

Free a slave

Not applicable today — this obligation predates the abolition of slavery and is no longer possible to fulfil.

2

Fast 60 consecutive days

Must be 60 unbroken days. If a single day is missed without a valid excuse, you must restart from day one. A demanding but valid option for those with the physical ability.

3

Feed 60 poor people — £300

The most commonly practised option in the UK. £5 per person × 60 people = £300 per deliberately broken fast. This must go to genuinely poor people.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Kaffarah amount for 2026?

Kaffarah for a deliberately broken Ramadan fast is £300 per fast in the UK (2026). This is based on feeding 60 poor people at £5 per person (30 × £5 × 2 meals = £300). This is the practical option in the UK — the other options (freeing a slave or fasting 60 consecutive days) are the alternatives from Fiqh, with the last being still applicable today.

When is Kaffarah required?

Kaffarah is required when a person deliberately breaks a valid Ramadan fast without a permissible excuse — through eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, or other fast-breaking actions done intentionally. It does not apply if you broke the fast due to illness, forgetfulness, or necessity. Kaffarah is one of the most serious obligations in Islamic law and represents sincere expiation.

What are the three options for Kaffarah?

The three options (in order of preference): 1) Free a slave — not applicable today. 2) Fast 60 consecutive days — this must be unbroken; if a single day is missed without excuse, you must restart from the beginning. 3) Feed 60 poor people — in the UK, £5 per person = £300 per deliberately broken fast. Most UK Muslims choose the third option.

Is Kaffarah the same as Fidya?

No. Fidya (£5/day) is for those permanently unable to fast. Kaffarah (£300/fast) is for those who deliberately break a valid fast. Fidya is a substitute; Kaffarah is an expiation for a serious sin. The amounts and contexts are completely different.

Is Kaffarah per fast or per Ramadan?

Kaffarah is per deliberately broken fast. If you deliberately break multiple fasts in one Ramadan, some scholars hold that a single Kaffarah covers all of them (if the person repents after the first and then breaks another, they may need separate Kaffarah — consult a scholar for your specific situation).

Does Kaffarah replace making up the fast?

In the Hanafi school, Kaffarah replaces the need to make up the fast (Qada) for the specific fast expiated. In the Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools, you must also make up the fast (Qada) in addition to paying Kaffarah. Follow your school's guidance or consult a scholar.

Pay your Kaffarah. World Aid Network distributes food to the poor in Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia — an accepted Kaffarah destination.
