The quick answer

The calculator estimates annual wealth Zakat in GBP using values you enter. It combines eligible assets, subtracts entered permitted liabilities, checks your selected nisab and applies 2.5% when you confirm the hawl condition. It does not issue a personal ruling or verify the eligibility of an asset or recipient.

Formula and threshold

Net eligible wealth = eligible assets − permitted deductions, with a minimum of zero. If current prices are available, net wealth meets the selected nisab, and the hawl condition is confirmed, the result is 2.5% of the net amount, rounded to the nearest penny.

Thresholds use 612.36g silver or 87.48g gold. The calculator defaults to silver but allows gold. Other recognised conventions use 595g silver and 85g gold. Its combined GBP method is not a complete implementation of every school’s rules for metal-only wealth or alloys.

Valuation inputs

Gold is valued from weight × carat ÷ 24 × fine-gold price, or a supplied GBP valuation. Silver uses weight × purity × fine-silver price, or a supplied GBP valuation. Tola and bhori/bori entries use approximately 11.664g per unit; prefer a documented gram weight if there is uncertainty.

Investment and pension proxies are explicitly identified as estimates. A fund-specific eligible value can be entered instead. The separate interest field is a record of disposal; exclude that amount from asset inputs before entering them.

Where indicative prices come from

The service uses the public exchange-api currency dataset, where XAU and XAG represent gold and silver in troy ounces. It converts to GBP per gram using 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce. Prices are indicative daily provider values rather than tradable or real-time quotes.

The provider’s date is reported separately from retrieval time. Missing, non-positive, mismatched or more-than-three-day-old data is rejected. If prices cannot be verified, the calculator asks for manual prices rather than substituting historical figures. Check a reliable dealer’s quote for your actual assessment date.

Saving, sharing and reminders

The full calculator saves entered fields in local storage on the current browser profile. Other people with access to that profile may be able to read them. Start fresh clears the saved calculator inputs. Save links encode the values in a URL fragment; they are not encrypted or access-controlled. Anyone with the link can recover the values.

Clipboard failure is reported rather than claiming success. A calendar download contains one reminder for the date you select and a generic calculator link; it does not include your financial inputs or claim exact future Hijri dates.

A worked boundary example

Worked example · illustrative figures

At an illustrative silver price of £1/g, nisab is £612.36. £600 net wealth is below it, so the estimate is £0. At £1,000, with hawl confirmed, the estimate is £25. If the price is missing, the calculator must ask for a price instead of deciding eligibility from a £0 threshold.
