Zakat in Ramadan: timing and preparation

Ramadan is a popular time to give Zakat, but your annual wealth obligation follows its relevant lunar anniversary.

The quick answer

Ramadan is a popular time to give Zakat, but your annual wealth obligation follows its relevant lunar anniversary. Do not delay an earlier liability solely to reach Ramadan. Advance giving and payments such as Fitrana need their own conditions and records.

Check the date before planning a donation

Record your Zakat anniversary and the corresponding local calendar date. If an obligation is already due, address it promptly. A campaign deadline or a particularly meaningful night does not automatically change the due date of your wealth Zakat.

Prepare the assessment

Gather your accounts, investment values, metal valuations and liabilities. A checklist helps you avoid duplicated balances and stale prices. See the calculation guide before choosing a payment amount.

Advance payments

Some approaches permit advance Zakat subject to conditions. Keep a record of the intention, recipient and amount and reconcile advance payments on the assessment date. Monthly giving should not be assumed to settle an annual liability without that check.

Separate Ramadan obligations

Fitrana is assessed per qualifying person; fidya and kaffarah have distinct conditions. None should be automatically combined with your 2.5% wealth calculation. Check provider rates and distribution deadlines for the relevant year.
