Dua for Zakat
When you pay Zakat, the collector or recipient traditionally makes a dua for you. There is no mandatory supplication for the payer — but making a sincere intention (niyyah) is a required condition for Zakat's validity. Here are the relevant supplications and their meanings.
The dua the recipient makes for the Zakat payer
When the Prophet ﷺ sent collectors to receive Zakat, he instructed them to make dua for the payer. This dua is narrated in Musnad Ahmad and is the established supplication:
آجَرَكَ اللَّهُ فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ، وَبَارَكَ فِيمَا أَبْقَيْتَ، وَجَعَلَهُ لَكَ طَهُوراً
Ājaraka-Llāhu fīmā aʿṭayta, wa bāraka fīmā abqayta, wa jaʿalahu laka ṭahūran
"May Allah reward you for what you have given, bless what you have kept, and make it a purification for you."
This dua addresses three things: reward for what was given, blessing on what remains, and purification of the wealth — which is the root meaning of Zakat itself (from zakā — to purify, to grow).
What the payer should say (niyyah)
The payer does not have a specific verbal dua that must be recited aloud. However, intention (niyyah) is a required condition for Zakat's validity in all four Sunni schools. Before or at the time of giving, form the intention in your heart:
نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أُخْرِجَ زَكَاةَ مَالِي
Nawaytu an ukhrija zakāta mālī
"I intend to give the Zakat of my wealth."
You may say this aloud or hold it silently in your heart — both are valid. The key is that you are clear in your intention that this payment is Zakat (obligatory purification), not optional Sadaqah.
General dua of acceptance
After giving Zakat, you may make any sincere personal supplication. Common ones include:
اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي
Allāhumma taqabbal minnī
"O Allah, accept from me."
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا
Allāhumma bārik lanā fīmā razaqtanā
"O Allah, bless for us what You have provided us."
The Quran on Zakat as purification
"Take from their wealth a charity (Sadaqah) by which you purify them and cause them increase." — Surah At-Tawbah 9:103
This verse establishes that Zakat purifies the payer's wealth — hence the dua above asks that the payment be a purification (ṭahūr).
